Publish-L is an active online publishing email discussion taking place now at http://www.publish-l.com. It caters to published and self-publishing authors.

The purpose of Publish-L is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information about publishing and marketing books and related materials.

The good news is, as a self-published author and reader of this blog, you have some very valuable stuff to share with the people on that list. You might even say you are a marketing expert. The other folks on that list will be drawn to you because of the advice and tactics you can share. Social Media is great, free publicity.

Just be sure to sign every email you write and discussion you post with information about your book, including a link to your webpage. After all, helping others is fun, but so is selling some books.

Using an Ebook Edition to Promote Your Self-published Book

Ebooks are bigger than ever, with recent news of Borders jumping into the mix this month. Aside from actually selling your ebook, did you know that an ebook edition of your self-published book can actually work into the promotion of your hard copy book.

Its no secret that the distribution of an ebook is quicker and more affordable. With your electronic ebook file, you can literally sell the same “thing” over and over again. By giving people a choice between your ebook and your paperback, you offer them two different price points. You can even publish portions of your ebook as a ‘teaser’ to promote your hardcopy book, selling one to literally sell the other.

If you don’t have an ebook edition, there is no better time than now to get one. If you have an ebook edition of your book, perhaps you are already using it to promote your hard copy version on places like Amazon’s Kindle Store, iPad, or any number of other new distribution options.

Media Leads for the Self Published Author

Have you ever read a newspaper article and seen a quote from the author of “such-and-such” and wondered how that could happen for you? Did the writer of that article just happen to know that author and call him up on the phone?

Sometimes, yes, but usually no. More likely, that author responded to a “quote request” that was sent out by either that article author or the newspaper. Thousands of articles are written every day on thousands of subjects, which gives you thousands of opportunities to get quoted – if only you knew how to hear about the opportunities.

Using Newspapers to Promote your Self-Published Book

There are two diverse tactics for promoting your self-published book:

1) Paying for advertising
2) Acquiring free advertising through press

Well, a subset to that second option is this: create press for yourself.

How? By writing for the newspaper.

Newspapers are in constant need for fresh content on a daily or weekly basis. Most general interest articles can be written by anyone, anywhere, and you don’t even need to live in the area where the paper is distributed (although it certainly helps as you get your feet wet).

Writing freelance articles for newspapers is an effective way to get your book “out there” because your byline will always be included with your article, and your book will always be mentioned in your byline.

Many freelance writers concentrate solely on contributing to magazines or websites, but you will be missing out on thousands of great markets if you ignore newspapers.

 As if our current economy wasn’t bad enough for small businesses, independent bookstores may be struggling, due to competing with the chains and online retailers like Amazon.com.  Nevertheless, when it comes to appearing in person for an event or book signing, or arranging consignment deals for in-stock carriage, the independent bookstore is the independently published author’s best friend.

Let’s make it easy for you to find them. Go to http://newpages.com/bookstores/default.htm for a list of states in the United States and click on your state for the major independent bookstores in your area.  Feel like traveling out of state, this resource will supply you with all the independent bookstores you want to find.  You can even purchase mailing lists to these stores pretty inexpensively if you want to send a promotional mailing.

Self Published Authors Tell Your Story

Daryn Kagan of CNN fame is seeking personal stories for her popular website at www.darynkagan.com.

Go to the area that is called “Tell Me Your Story” and share your experience of self-publishing your book. Or, share the experience that lead to writing the book in the first place. You will be able to write a brief description of your story. If you have photos of book signing events, any book videos or audio clips of interviews you have done, be sure to check the appropriate boxes on the right-hand side. This a great cathartic exercise and gets your book “out there.”
