Celebrate Earth Day With POD

Earth Day is coming up, and everyone is trying to be a little more eco-friendly. Print on Demand (POD) is perfect for environmentally conscious authors because books aren’t printed until they are purchased. Therefore, no trees are being killed to create an inventory that will just sit around, and no energy is being used to create a book that won’t sell.

Self publishing can also be an eco-conscious choice if you find a company who shares your values. Check out Self Publishing for the Eco-Conscious to learn more. Happy Earth Day!

What Are Your Self-Publishing Questions?

Every week I write a post that hopefully answers some of your self-publishing questions. Recently, I’ve shared information about choosing a genre for your book, seeking advice from other writers, writing an annotation, and hiring a ghostwriter. This week, I’d like to know what questions you have so I can address them in upcoming blogs. Tell me, what confuses you about self-publishing? What decisions related to self-publishing are you having difficulty with? What services, such as ghost writing and illustrating, bewilder you? What do you need to know to make the self-publishing process easier and more enjoyable? Please comment on this post to share. I look forward to reading and answering your questions.

100 Years of Dr. Seuss

This month, we’re celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Dr. Seuss, the man who created all of the amazing children’s stories. Loved by children and adults, Dr. Seuss wrote some of the most popular children’s books in the history of literature. Everyone knows his titles: The Cat in The Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and so many more. Today, his creations have been turned into movies, and his name has become an enterprise.

But Dr. Seuss wasn’t always so respected. In the beginning of his career, he received rejection after rejection, but he didn’t give up. He knew he had stories to share with the world. If he hadn’t believed in his work, we all would have missed out on one of the most talented and special writers in history.

As you work on your books this month and consider publishing, remember Dr. Seuss. Believe in your talent and in your story, and in honor of the great author, take a risk and stand up for your work. Who knows, maybe one day your books will be as popular as his.

Famous Self-Published Author: Thomas Paine

In school, you learned all about the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. Well, one of the most important publications at that time was originally self-published. Common Sense by Thomas Paine was a pamphlet that encouraged freedom from England. The pamphlet was originally self-published anonymously and became an instant success. The publication is still discussed and read in schools and colleges today.

Not only did people read and love this self-published publication, but it sparked change and lead to our freedom. If you want to make a difference in society, share your ideas with the world. Don’t be afraid of rejection, and if someone tells you that no one will ever read or remember a self-published book, think of Thomas Paine.

Choosing a Self Publisher

Self publishing is a big decision. Before jumping in, you need to research your options and pick a self publisher that meshes with your needs and goals. Here are three things you should look for when choosing a self-publishing company.

Design Options

Review the company’s interior and cover options. Most companies have standards for each genre. These standards are typically based on what is most viable in the marketplace.

Internal Processes

Each company has a process for handling the publication process, and requesting exceptions to this process can result in extra fees.

Prices and Options

Each company offers a variety of services during production and marketing. Find out what each company offers and the prices.

I’d love to know, what factors helped you choose a self-publishing company?
