This week in the world of self-publishing:

This week, hear the stories of authors who have chosen self-publishing. From Veronica R. Wells who wanted to share the story of her grandmother’s life to various horror authors who were fed up with being turned down by traditional publishing companies, find out why self-publishing provides something unique for varying authors. After reading those stories, the last article on the rise of self-publishing as an industry will perhaps come as no surprise to you.

Self-publishing isn’t the easiest avenue for publishing a book, that we all know, but this delightful interview with Veronica R. Wells sheds light on why the challenges presented by self-publishing are worthwhile. Wells says, “I had more control, freedom and autonomy in how and when the book came out.” She admits that those freedoms also meant “the very necessary and expensive process of promoting this book, fell on my shoulders.” However, Veronica had a story that she felt compelled to tell: the story of her grandmother’s struggles, dysfunctions, encounters with abuse, etc. Through writing this story, she realized that this was a story not particular to her family, but something shared by women everywhere. Wells wasn’t concerned with having her first book be the picture of perfection, she encourages authors to dive in head first. The lessons she learned and her to impact her audience were well worth the anxieties and stresses of publishing the book on her own. Having a full time job wasn’t something that Wells let get in the way of her writing or of her self-publishing efforts. I would be surprised if her story doesn’t inspire you to try and do the same. Wells doesn’t sugarcoat the process, she admits that “the psychological challenges were probably the greatest and hardest to overcome.” She insists that we quiet the voices of doubt and distraction, something I think we all need to be reminded of from time to time.

So if you’re anything like me, you’re a stranger to all the subgenres of horror fiction, which apparently range from “supernatural horror, postapocalyptic horror, fantasy horror, sci-fi horror, comedy horror, and then all the vampire, werewolf, and zombie horror.” If you haven’t heard of or read any books that fit under those headings, you won’t be shocking any horror authors. Horror authors have begun to perceive themselves as the misfits of the authorial world, after receiving all too many rejections from traditional publishing companies. As Joe Schwartz, horror author, says, “The odds of getting someone substantial to publish your work when you’re basically just getting started are less than awful.” This band of merry misfits has turned to self-publishing after not being able to make it into traditional presses. They’ve made this turn knowing that they wouldn’t be slaying as salesmen, but these “obsessive authors” are committed to their “rabid, but small, fan bases.” Hear the thoughts and opinions of many of these dedicated authors who have turned to self-publishing after rejection, only to realize self-publishing was the route they should’ve taken first and foremost. Horror author Jason S. Ridler says, “I’m not aggressively promoting, and I don’t care about being a rock star bestselling author. The time I have left on this planet has to be spent doing things I care about. Relentless promotion and book tours aren’t bad things, but I’d rather spend time being better as a writer.” Ridler’s message is an important one, don’t let rejection or fear of not being able to promote your book stop you from doing what you love.

Self-publishing companies, such as Boss of Me, are noticing a rise in customers which they attribute to an increasingly educated population combined with the ease of self-publishing and the autonomy it provides authors over the finished product. This low-cost alternative ensures that the majority of the profits go to the authors directly, rather than to the publishing company. According to Mr. Goh of Rank Books, it is not only an increase in profits that self-published authors can expect, but also a lower initial investment. Mr. Goh says, “Previously, a minimum run of 500 books would cost at least $3,000 to print. Now, a minimum run of 50 costs just $1,288, making it easier on the wallet for self-publishing authors.” Considering that some authors don’t have commercial interests with their books, this cutting of costs can be a big incentive to go for the DIY approach of publishing. If self-expression is your main motivation, or if you happen to be someone who is writing a book just to give to family and friends, then self-publishing is probably the route you should take, and this article clearly and succinctly explains why that is.

Ringing in the Holidays: Veteran’s Day Edition!

Veteran’s Day is day where we pay tribute to those who have served our in our country’s Armed Forces; this can be done by attending parades, by bringing flowers to veteran’s graves, hanging an American flag, etc. This day originally marked the end of World War I–the war to end all wars–and was deemed Armistice Day, a day dedicated to the cause of world peace.

Those of us with hindsight on our side know that unfortunately, WWI did not lead to world peace, but rather to the even more devastating WWII. Following WWII it was decided that November 11th would instead be a day to commemorate all veterans, not just those who served in WWI.

It is important to express gratitude for those amongst our country’s citizens who have been willing to put their life on the line to protect not only our country, but also the people of the countries where they are stationed. The amount of sacrifice demanded of such a task is one that should be given the utmost respect.

I want to point out to authors reading this that the word veteran points beyond that of military service and extends to anyone who has a lot of experience in a particular occupation or field. While there of course can be no real comparison made to veterans of war and veterans of say, self-publishing, I would like to suggest that veterans of the self-publishing field should begin to think of themselves as people who provide a different sort of service for our country.

To publish your ideas, your stories, your beliefs or your experiences means that you are in a way paying tribute to those who have fought for your right to do so. To not utilize that creative spark inside you is to shun the gift of living in a country and in a time where you have the means to do so.

Think of the amazing diaries of someone such as Anne Frank. Frank had to hide away from the unjust persecution that would eventually take her life before she could, by her own volition, share her story. We have the liberty in this country to write freely, and it is not one that should be taken for granted. Our stories can change people’s lives, they can change the way people think, and we don’t have to hide away to create them.

The veterans who fight abroad to keep our country safe make it possible for some of us to become veteran authors, readers, editors, publishers, etc. Honor those authors, readers, editors, publishers, etc. who have decided that they will not turn away from such a priceless opportunity. You have the freedom to sacrifice your time to do something you love.

Those in the Armed Forces have sacrificed time doing what they love, they have spent a great deal of time away from their families and loved ones–don’t let it be for nothing.

From the Archives: “5 Online Tasks for Self Publishing Authors to Complete Before NanoWriMo”

Welcome back to our Tuesday segment, where we’ll be revisiting some of our most popular posts from the last few years.  What’s stayed the same?  And what’s changed?  We’ll be updating you on the facts, and taking a new (and hopefully refreshing) angle on a few timeless classics of Self Publishing Advisor.

There is a little more than a week until NanoWriMo begins! If you’re like many self publishing authors, you’ve been spending the month of October preparing for the challenge. You’ve probably started brainstorming and outline and cleaning off your desk, but there are a few online tasks that you should complete before the official beginning of NanoWriMo. Here is your to-do list.

1) Make sure you are registered.

Before you start all the fun tasks below, make sure you are registered for the event. You can do so by visiting NanoWriMo.org. This will ensure that you have access to all the benefits and resources the challenge has to offer.

2) Create social media pages.

Social media is a great way to market yourself and your book, and many readers, agents, and publishers expect you to take advantage of this marketing tool. You could create social media pages for yourself, your book, or your characters. Be creative, and have fun with social media. This is also a great time to start a blog.

3) Connect with other authors.

Of the greatest benefits of  NanoWriMo is the opportunity to connect with other authors. They can encourage and support you during this project. You can connect with authors by visiting the NanoWriMo website as well as by searching social media sites for people who are participating.

4) Download some music.

Music is a great way to become inspired. Download a few songs that you can listen to when you need some inspiration. Listen to songs that your characters would be interested, or search for music that reminds you of your setting or plot.

5) Play on Pinterest.

Pinterest is a great way to find inspiration as well as promote your book. Create boards for your characters, setting, or plot. Be creative, and have fun with this. What outfits would your character wear? What food would your character eat?

Most of the time, we like writing.

Or don’t we?

Sometimes, writing feels like writing. And sometimes—not just because of Halloween, but for other reasons too—writing feels like one long protracted scream into the void. (My scream? “WHY ARE WRITING OUTLINES SO DARN HARD??” Yours might be different.) It’s realistic to expect that at some point during an intensive writing spree—whether you’re doing NaNoWriMo or not—you’ll face insurmountable obstacles and unstoppable forces and immovable objects. Or at least, you’ll face challenges that seem like all of the above: Writer’s Block, characters gone haywire, plot holes, inconsistencies, and that one thing you really really want to edit but shouldn’t yet because it’ll totally torch your forward momentum. You know, those things.

If I’ve learned anything from my many attempts at NaNoWriMo—mostly unsuccessful insofar as word count is concerned—it’s that preparation and a little foresight goes a long way towards keeping November (or, again, any intensive writing spree—especially if you have to meet some sort of deadline) fun. Thus, I thought it worth reviving Wendy’s wonderful 2012 blog for both your benefit and mine. Her suggestions still hold true today, four years and many gray hairs later, even though social media and even relationship-building is a moving target (So long, Vine. You’ll be missed*sob*).

Better still, the principle underlying Wendy’s post holds true:

Think ahead.

Spend a day or two setting yourself up for success and you’ll not need to spend thirty-odd days obsessing over the details. Look for your inspiration and put together that inspiration board on Pinterest. Spend a few hours building an architecture for your piece. Take a moment to either hop on social media and give warning that you’ll be scaling back your presence to help with focus—or to lay the groundwork for increased involvement, predicated on the knowledge that doing this thing in community is so much nicer than doing it solo. Register with NaNoWriMo if you think that might give you a little extra motivation, or register with a local writer’s club for something in your own backyard. Swing on by your libraries for writing sprints! (Those things are wonderful.)

Whatever you do, don’t wait to do it! This post goes live the morning that NaNoWriMo gets started, but it’s worth doing all these things even if it takes away from one day’s word total. After all, you’re laying the groundwork for everything that follows.

Ringing in the Holidays: Black Friday Edition!

Black Friday brings a lot of not so flattering imagery to mind, from shoppers pushing each other out of the way in Wal-Mart aisles to lines of people camped out outside stores and lines of traffic stymied on the highway. Black Friday has become a quasi-holiday of sorts, mainly because it is an American tradition that dates all the way back to the 1930s. Yes, that far back.

Regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season (again, ‘quasi-season’), retailers began opening their stores a bit earlier the day after Thanksgiving back in the 1930s. Today, some major retailers will open right after Thanksgiving dinner, or midnight–or other hours no one should be out shopping–offering promotional sales to those who are obviously not suffering from a tryptophan induced turkey coma, and who are thus able to storm out into the night for the deal of a lifetime.

Supposedly the cognomen “Black Friday” originated in the 1960s in Philadelphia, where people used the term to describe the abundant foot traffic and cluttered streets. I rather like to imagine that it’s perhaps more fitting today; people whisking out into the dark night, stalking up and down aisles and preparing to battle other predacious consumers over that new X-Box or flat screen TV. If you think that’s a dramatic depiction of Black Friday, keep in mind that seven people have died on this day since 2006, and there have been about 98 injuries associated with the Black Friday shopping madness.

Entertaining history digression aside, Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year, which means that as an author with a book to sell, it is not a day to sit back and relax. So, what can you do to rake in some of the Black Friday business?

First of all, BIG discounts are all the rage on Black Friday. Offering your book for an extremely cheap rate will assuredly promote ‘impulse’ buys from people who might otherwise have considered giving your book a chance. While you don’t always want to offer your book out for an extremely low price, doing so on this particular day could be beneficial for gaining new readers!

Another thing to consider: 99 cent or free ebook editions of your book can gain you free advertising on free or bargain ebook sites. These sites will want to feature your book when it is discounted, and that feature will be free advertising for you, before people even buy your book! Notify these sites when you discount your book, and try to line it up with Black Friday; snag online shoppers who are looking for a deal or to try something new!

Collaborating with other others who have books similar to yours is also a great way expand your marketing efforts. When you combine promotional efforts, this means that their audience becomes your potential audience! It’s a, ‘You scratch my authorial back, and I’ll scratch yours,’ kind of thing. The best thing about this collaboration is that you will enhance your network for book marketing in general, which obviously expands well beyond Black Friday!

So, whether or not you see yourself armed with pepper spray for self-defense as you go out to buy the new iPhone 10–or whatever number they’re on now–just remember that before Black Friday, there’s a lot you can be doing to market your book. More importantly, none of those things require the bravery and fortitude it must take for someone to actually go shopping on that day.

Bringing in the Harvest!

Harvest Celebration: a time of merriment, ample food, music, and a reprieve from the hard work done in the fields during the growing season. A time to reap the fruits of your labor, a time to celebrate the coming to life of what were just a few months ago mere seeds being pushed into the soil.

As an author, you know the feeling. A seed of an idea that you invested hours into watering; you weeded out the grammatical errors; you kept it safe from the cold bouts of dwindling motivation; and you watched it grow from a sapling of a paragraph into a full grown manuscript. The celebration of creativity, of growth, and of life is one that farmers and writers alike can share.

Harvest Celebration focuses on the tradition of communities coming together. You can use this time of year as a platform to host an event that showcases local authors and that celebrates the creative members of your community. Perhaps showcase the history of authors in your community, or writing that showcases the history of your community itself. Host a reading where people can stand up and share excerpts from their favorite books or poems by local authors or about local history. Collaborate with local farmers, wineries, etc. and try to get food donations to provide those who come to your event.

Another idea: ask local farmers to share some of their favorite poems or stories about farming, or perhaps ask them for samples of their own writing if they have it. If that’s too much socializing or too much of a hassle to collaborate for you, find agricultural writing on your own or with the help of a few close friends. Put together a small book that can be given away at a harvest festival in your area to showcase written expressions about the relationship between human beings and their environment. Authors and poets like Wendell Berry, who was a farmer in Kentucky for much of his life, would make for terrific samples in a piece like this.

Celebrate what farmers have reaped healthy crops from their harvest, celebrate writers who have reaped wonderful stories and poems from their lived experience, and celebrate your community, and communities around the world, who have allowed for these people to flourish. This Harvest season, may your bellies be full of good food, and may your bookshelves be full of good stories.
