Publishers Weekly is getting into the self-publishing business with the launch of a new site dedicated to self-publishing.  BookLife  will go live on May 29, 2014 at BookExpo America. The site will focus on three main subject areas: book creation, publishing,  and book marketing.

Publishers Weekly has published a self-published eBook guide. Publishing 101: The Publishers Weekly Introduction to Publishing and Self-Publishing is designed to help authors navigate every step of the publishing process. This is an excellent resource for authors considering self-publishing.

Why You Should Self-Publish

This successful self-published author talks about how his latest self-publish book recently debuted #7 on the New York Times Bestseller List and how he has sold over a million books in the last two years. My favorite part of the article is when the author says, “My happiest days were spent writing, not being a bestselling author.” I also like when he states, “Implicit in the message that only some people should publish is the stance that all publishing is commercial, it’s all about making money, about being a bestseller, a pro. But that’s not the reason I do it.”

Self-Publishing on a Shoestring: Amazon’s Matchbook Program

There has been a lot of buzz about Amazon’s Matchbook Program. The program gives customers who buy a print copy of a book in the program a deeply discounted or free Kindle version of the same book. It’s similar to what Amazon has been doing with their audiobooks, where anyone who buys an e-book, can order a deeply discounted audiobook version, as well.

Self-publishing in the News

The term self-publishing is currently some pretty hot semantical real estate, with many fighting to earn its definition. And also with a polemic of sorts created between it and traditional publishing. This blog will has even been known to explore content outlining the advantages of self-publishing over the traditional model.

But perhaps the truly visionary author is the one who can find value in simply, publishing. Across all platforms and through a combination of all the resources available. Check out From Underground to Random House.

Self-publishing and Harlequin Kicking-up Dust

A mass of heated discussion is being shouted around the publishing world in the wake of recent announcements by Harlequin and Thomas Nelson to step in the direction of self-publishing.

Responses have exploded across the industry from the New Yorker to Publisher’s Weekly. Crotchety, curious, and shocked are among the many opinions swirling about, with the resurgence of the term ‘vanity press’ included in the semantical outcry of the literati.

Shocking at best. Inevitable indeed. Masturbatory? Opinions will be opinions. While I cannot fault traditional publishing houses from offering genuine detraction of these decisions – they are business too, after-all. As authors we must be wary of drinking the cool-aide. Not an easy thing to do. Writing is a personal, often intimate endeavor, which propagates a natural to desire for validation – something agents and traditional publishers have a monopoly on.

If writing is an art, publishing is a business. In business, components such as, ingenuity, creativity, evaluating risk, and (gulp), diversification have a proven track record. Those elements should be considered on the micro and macro levels – the success of your own book along with the industry in general.
