SEPTEMBER HOLIDAYS CELEBRATE WRITERS!

Dear Diary Day

When looking through the list of Holidays for the month of September I could not believe what I discovered: the “Dear Diary Day?” How did that make it onto this list? Quickly, an image of my friend, Ruth, came to mind. She is an amazing librarian and friend who helps me locate the most obscure information. Many times she’s gone to the back room and brought a diary into a secluded reading room for me to read. Oh, yes. She would definitely approve of celebrating Diary Writers.

If you’ve ever had the privilege of holding an “old” diary in your hands you’ll understand beauty of the moment and depth of real life story that it holds. The illustration I’ve added here is a page from a woman’s diary written as she traveled the Oregon Trail. Abigail Scott Duniway’s words convey every emotion, and offer us a way to imagine what that life was like.

Another, better-known diary is that written by Anne Frank. Her heart’s cry rings throughout history and speaks to the world today saying: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

When the movie “Glory” was made—from the book “Lay this Laurel” by Lincoln Kirstein and Richard Benson—researchers confirmed many of the author’s facts from letters, journals and diaries. Set during the American Civil War, and the first all-volunteer “colored regiment,” the authenticity and heart of those events were told through those handwritten “true stories” and brought to life by many superlative actors. During the filming the scene depicted one of the colored soldiers, portrayed by Denzel Washington, being flogged. At his direction he was “lashed at full contact with a special whip that would not cut his back, but still stung. For the final take of that scene Zwick (the director) called “Cut!” to signal the flogging to stop and the result was Washington’s spontaneous tear down his cheek.” (imdb.com/glory/trivia)

IT IS WHEN WE, AS WRITERS, develop our stories with these levels of authenticity, that we will discover the true joy of writing. The greatest novels ever written come from the heart.

an american pilot patricia ann beckRecently I discovered a more present-day true story titled: An American Pilot: Memoirs of Love and War by Patricia Ann Beck. Although this novel is fictionalized the events come right out of the author’s journals and memories. When the husband, a U.S. Air Force pilot is deployed to Turkey during the war in Cyprus, his family is transported with him on a life-changing journey. Even as they experience the culture-shock-syndrome—the fear and danger that surrounds them—they learn more about family relationships. Together they uncover the inside story of the Muslim culture—the Truth behind the veil as every experience transforms their Faith in God and His constant presence in the midst of every moment.

One reviewer of this book stated, “The author has a very sincere way with words. She made me feel like I was right beside her…actually seeing it for myself.”

Keyword for the day: AUTHENTIC. When we allow ourselves (as writers) to be as truthful in our books as we are in our personal journals and dairies, THAT is when Readers will appreciate those books, buy them as gifts for close friends and new friends, and read them again…and again.

NOW, CONSIDER giving yourself a vacation to read your favorite based-on-a-true-story novel (my current favorite is AD30 and AD33 by Ted Dekker). Soak in the settings (descriptions) and the character development (layer-by-layer). Yes, that may take a week or two, but then you’ll be ready to go back to your writing room, complete your novel, and get it published! ⚓︎

SEPTEMBER HOLIDAYS CELEBRATE WRITERS!

Gratitude Day

This must be my month for cliché statements. They keep popping into my head, so I’ll share another one with you because it helps me keep focused and creative when I’m having a challenging writing day: “Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude.” At first I wanted to ignore that thought. Yup, I was having a sour-face day. My leisurely life as a writer—who rises in the morning to the enticing scent of a vanilla latte awaiting me—had turned into TOO MANY projects racing through my head. For quite a lengthy season I’d been able to organizing my writing time and play time and even nap time into a beautiful weekly pattern; but not recently. So with that cliché popped into my thoughts, I growled.

gratitude day thank you

Later that same day, I was waiting for my appointment time at the dentist and scrolling through some blogs. The second title to appear: “Why Writers Should Be Supremely Grateful” by Andrea Lundgren (#atozchallenge #writer). I almost growled out loud. But I loved her opening statements and her blog lifted my spirits and perspective. Andrea said: “We should definitely be the most grateful because we get to hang out with some of the coolest people in real life (other writers and readers), even if it’s only through the internet. [AND!] We get to be best friends and confidants of some of the most interesting and intriguing people in fiction that (hopefully) have ever existed [the characters we create].

Immediately my thoughts turned to two characters I’m developing—one for a sci-fi/mystery novel series and one for a modern-day, hometown, maybe Hallmark series. Both are women characters with hidden strengths they never realized they possessed until…. Oh, yes, indeed. I am grateful for their companionship! THEN, two books popped up on my books-you-need-to-read list

Because I’m also deep into research for a military background novel, the title: Vignettesvignettes from vietnam brice h barnes From Vietnam: Brief Moments of Sanity and Belated Notes of Gratitude, came up. The author, Brice H. Barnes shares the event of his personal miracle that he experienced during the Tet Counter-Offensive and compiled these true stories—which emphasize the value of teamwork—dedicating the book to a variety of men who were major contributors to the successes that Barnes experienced in Nam. He closes each vignette with an expression of his deep sense of gratitude. There is nothing like the Memoir/True Stories to remind us of the miracles of daily life.

The second book was The Upside of Down Times: Discovering The Power of Gratitude lisa ryan by Lisa Ryan. Because I had just experienced my own “down time,” this title became a must-have book. Ryan’s leading summary statement is so true: “Most of us tend to focus on the negative.” The UPSIDE is that we can learn to harness the power of gratefulness.”

Immediately I started thinking. What about the women characters in my two novel series? Will the ideas offered by author Lisa Ryan help me release their hidden strengths in their stories? Ryan is now only an author, but she’s has some movie experience. Maybe, just maybe, her ideas are just what I need to get these novels moving again.

So today I’m FILLED WITH GRATITUDE! Thankful that my gift is writing. Thankful that my writing friends are always willing to support me, encourage me, nudge me and occasionally yell at me.

Thankful that other writers have produced their books so that I can benefit from their experience and knowledge. And, thankful for the expertise of people connected to book publishing; the editors, coaches, marketing specialists and printers! Yes! Thank you Mr. Johannes Gutenberg for inventing the printing press! OH how the world has been blessed ever since! ⚓︎

SEPTEMBER HOLIDAYS CELEBRATE WRITERS!

Apple Day

We all know the cliché statement “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Indeed, it is a very sweet treat that gives our physical health a boost. The same is true for writing. Setting aside time to write every day whether we’re working on a specific project, or not, sets us up for success.

apple day

change your life through writing roger lownNot long ago someone told me about a fairly new book titled, Change Your Life Through Writing by Roger Lown. When I read the bio about the author and the synopsis of the book, I was impressed. Every time I walk the aisles at a writers’ conference, or enjoy time with other writers at local writing workshops, or speak at libraries, bookstores and cafés, I’m saying these same things. Writing produces change in our lives and the lives of our readers.

We have been designed with “a mind that thinks, creates, and invents.” “Writing can take that which is invisible in our minds into visible form on paper.” And voilà! What we’ve dreamed—the characters, plot, environment, actions/suspense and resolution—all come together in a beautiful book.

As stated in his bio, Mr. Lown is taking his own advice and working on his next book, “The Life and Tones of the Lake City V.F.D.” (Volunteer Fire Department). With his first book in print and the second one “in labor and delivery,” Mr. Lown definitely wins my APPLE DAY award.

How might you win the APPLE DAY award? Here are some sweet ideas to keep your creative flow moving.

  • Select one of your favorite types of apples and prepare it for eating.

  • Slice it open (into sections) and take a moment to compare that tasty gift to your gift of writing and the process you experience as you write your book.

  • At the core are multiple seeds being held in place until the right time for planting—just as the core of our story ideas carry multiple plot seeds/threads that will lead Readers through and to the resolution.
  • The meat or flesh of the apple carries the flavor we all enjoy—just as the development of our characters and the events of their lives (thoughts, emotions, choices, consequences) flesh out the layers of the story.
  • The skin of an apple wraps around the whole apple giving it completeness—much like the climax or end of the story—which delivers a satisfying crunch.
  • And the stem of the apple holds it to the tree (its support system) until ready for release—like our supporters hold us, and encourage us, as well as edit, help with book cover design and prepare us for marketing—before the apple/book drops into our hands.

It is, indeed, a daily treat we can each enjoy—to play with the words in our imaginations and build a story. Like Martin Luther is quoted saying, “If you want to change the world, pick up your pen and write.”

As I see and hear what is happening around the world these days, my heart aches. When I ask myself, ‘What can you do about it?’ I quickly answer myself and say, “Write! Write your stories. Write your blogs. Write letters to your children and grandchildren.”

So it is that I encourage you to do the same. WRITE and allow others the opportunity to savor your words—your ideas—as developed in essay, short story, poetry and/or epic tales. Then, PUBLISH! ⚓︎

SEPTEMBER HOLIDAYS CELEBRATE WRITERS!

Labor Day

Many years ago, at a writing workshop, one of the author/speakers shared the following words, which continue to inspire me today: When no one is watching, always write from your heart and with excellence; for those pages become the fruit of your labor.

Do your friends (and family) understand the labor intensive work you’re doing when you’re writing? Unless they are also writers, most folks have no clue. However, not long after I heard the above statement, I adopted the Labor Day Holiday as one of significance for me and I’ve used its history to help “other people” gain a better understanding of my profession as a WRITER. Here are a few thoughts for you to share with others, too.

labor day

  • The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City, a highly promoted event connected to factory labor union workers who were definitely under-appreciated at the time.
  • The idea to celebrate “workingmen” and their labor quickly spread across the country and by 1885 most every industrial center across America participated.
  • The celebration of Labor Day soon expanded to workers in every physically laborious industry from laundry workers to construction and dock workers.

The component of Labor Day that speaks to me—as an author—is the basic definition: Labor Day “honors the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of their country.” It honors “the vital force of labor in the U.S. that has contributed substantially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known.”

Writers, and the labor we engage in on a daily basis, are absolutely part of that “vital force of labor” who make valuable contributions matching that definition to a “T.”

The greatest contribution we offer to the world is IDEAS!

  • Author Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a prolific writer in the 18th century who greatly influenced many of the writers of the U. S. Declaration of Independence.
  • Benjamin Franklin’s writings not only influenced the early U.S. colonies (politically) but gave clear ideas for the development of the Postal Service
  • Thomas Paine in his books, The Rights of Man and Common Sense, continue to contribute to the “prosperity and well-being” of the world.
  • George Orwell’s novel, 1984, remains a best seller today as it offers a thought-provoking “what if” scenario.

YOUR WRITING LABORS are producing more IDEAS right now. Whether in the genre of Memoir, like Anne Frank (The Diary of a Young Girl) or the realm of other worlds like Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451) and C.S. Lewis (The Narnia Chronicles), the writing we accomplish today will sow ideas into the future for generations yet unborn.

I am often asked why I believe so much in self-publishing and the answer I offer contains all of what I’m sharing today. I believe every writer is inspired to create the specific piece they’re working on. However, traditional publishing simply takes TOO LONG to get books “in print,” their selection process DROPS TOO MANY excellent authors, and their books have a finite lifespan. With the support of self-publishing presses our books can literally STAY IN PRINT, period. ⚓︎

S. O. S. – Writers Need Help, Too – Part III

The manuscript is finished! Woo Hoo! Now you’re ready to PUBLISH! The writing was so much fun! Where do we go from here?

The “big” traditional publishing houses today literally have hundreds of back-logged books waiting for their editorial staffs to “review” manuscripts and make their changes according to the “standard” of every specific genre.

First, I NOT want my book to be changed. My editor and I have completed it just the way I want it and no other editors are required.

Second, contracts with the traditional publishers give them full latitude in selecting a book cover. Nope—I do not want that, either. I have very specific ideas for the cover design.

help wanted

So, let’s look at the options today’s self-publishers offer. Again, this will require a bit of Internet Research to find the BEST FIT for me and my book.

  • After making a list of the Self-Publishing companies that look best to me I begin calling their main telephone lines and asking to speak to a Publishing Consultant.
    • I compare the publishing consultant to a National Park Service trail guide who, before I embark on my highly anticipated journey, will give me the “lay of the land.”
    • This person will walk me through the pros and cons of each publishing option available within their specific company.
    • He/she listens to what my manuscript is about and guides me to the best options for my particular manuscript needs.

The best Publishing Consultant I’ve ever enjoyed working with literally held my client’s hand through the whole start-up process. Her conversations with him extended over several weeks, which is exactly what he needed in order to make the best decisions for his book(s). She looked at the initial manuscript pages we submitted, listened to my client’s purpose for writing the book, and guided us to the very best options, which included personal cover design, extra help with photography placements, and layout design. My client gave her rave reviews in a letter to company’s owner.

Even though I sincerely believe that most of my clients would develop ulcers if they attempted to publish totally independently, to be fair, I will also mention the self-publishing “tools” to be considered. They include: Amazon’s CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing, Barnes & Noble’s PubIt, Smashwords, and others. IF a client has little or no financial support for their writing efforts, or they have something short they want to publish—something that will possibly attract Readers to their major book(s)—I believe these are good options to consider. However, there is no Publishing Consultant to walk you through this forest.

Working with a Self-Publishing Company, and their publishing staff of experts, is (in my opinion) the best option for today’s authors. If finances are a concern, many have “gift cards” available (given by supportive family and friends) which can be applied to any of the publishing needs. The helping hand of the Publishing Consultant is priceless—and is included in the publishing package you select. ⚓︎
