WRITER SEEKS SUPPORT TEAM

Have you collected several years-worth of Writer’s Digest magazines anhelp!d multiple editions of the Writer’s Market? Have you gone to Writer’s Conferences, sat in the back row and collected every handout? Have you walked bookstore aisles searching for that one writing advice book that would motivate you to actually publish what you’ve written? These are, indeed, excellent resources and you’ll learn many things through listening to their articles and fact-finding pieces and reading each chapter. However, they are not the hands-on, personally invested assistants that we all need in our writing lives at various strategic moments. I’ve been told that the journey I’ve taken in my writing career is similar to that of many authors—even the famous ones. So it is that I hope the following examples of my personal experiences will encourage you to seek and accept help along your own writing path.

  • Stories popped into my head ALL the time and I never found/took the time to write them down except for the occasional basic concept which I filed Then a neighbor mentioned that our local county library was hosting a writing workshop—and I signed up! The instructor was an experienced author whose encouraging manner led to the completion of my first published short story!
  • That library workshop group of people grew in solidarity as we invested in each other during the next several 8-week sessions. Then times—and county library budget—changed and we learned that there would be no more workshops in the foreseeable future. SO—we established our own Writers-at-Work group and the instructor joined us as one of the working This group remains loosely connected today—after close to 45 years together! We will never stop mentoring each other!
  • One particular short story caught my husband’s eye. It is a Christmas story titled DEPLOYED, and its storyline touched several of my author-friends as well. With his big nudge and support we printed 500 copies and donated the majority of them to encourage military units as they were deployed. Later, I published it on Amazon/Kindle, and am now developing it into a novel. This would not be happening if I’d never surrounded myself with my Personal Support Team.
  • As I grew in writing skills and knowledge, and my supporters grew in their nudging skills, I became an Advance Writing teacher! What an amazing experience to work with high school students! Their imaginations inspired each other, I was inspired, too! Those are the years that I began setting aside notes for a different kind of book which eventually became FIREPROOF PROVERBS, A Writers Study of Words—self-published with Outskirts Press.
  • When the teaching season of my life concluded, a new door opened, and I started working with beginning authors to edit, critique, and prepare their projects for publication—and that has been my writing life for the past ten years. With the publication of each author’s book I am again blessed beyond measure!

So there you have it—a personal example of one writer who has experienced the multiple benefits of supportive people throughout one writing career. I call this the TEAM EFFECT, similar to the concept of a ripple effect as each individual nudges you along and widens your horizons making your writing better!

About my decision to self-publish? I simply did not want to wait years to be accepted by a traditional publishing house as I queried and/or worked with an agent who would receive part of my royalty. Instead, I did my research into self-publishing companies, talked with other authors who have self-published, and then selected Outskirts Press. Their Author Consultant, Publishing Consultant, and Design Specialist were excellent additions to my Support Team. When the time comes, I’ll be publishing with them, again! ⚓︎

WRITER SEEKS MENTOR

January and the New Year nudge many of us to look into the future and consider what we might accomplish during the next twelve months. Quite often this season of new loungingpossibilities fills me with memories of the English/writing teachers in my life—the men and women who were passionate about grammar, sentence structure and the specific definitions of words. Many of my friends talk about the professors who became their tour guides into the worlds of American and English Literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance writings and the dramatic works of stage plays and poetry. For me, personally, I continued my education through writers’ conferences and local creative writing workshops. Without exception, each of the instructors fed me the knowledge they’d learned—and experienced—giving me the opportunity to absorb as much as I would or could at the time. I will forever be thankful for these counselors, advisors and mentors in my life.

Have you been a protégé of an English teacher, Journalism professor or local Creative Writing instructor?  Have you advanced your skills and abilities under their tutoring? Are you now ready to be a Mentor? Here are few thoughts to consider in this New Year—as you find yourself in position to encourage the youngest and oldest writers in your neighborhoods.

  • Be prepared with lists of resources. Take an inventory of your own writing resources. Include books and articles you’ve found most helpful and also include several of your favorite books—in several genres—that demonstrate the best of writing expertise.
  • Learn about your own personality type and the corresponding communication skills that allow you to connect with someone who asks for your advice.
  • Create a list of questions that you can select from which will help you understand what the person—and their writing project—need from you.
  • Be willing to decline a request for help. It is quite possible that you are a link to help that person connect with the writer/person who will be their best advisor.

There are several authors I know who are offering creative support to writers. Two of my “go to” mentors are Francine Rivers (Christian Fiction) and Joanne Penn (Thrillers). Their websites and blogs offer excellent advice developed from years of experience and award-winning writing. They are excellent resources for those who are a bit shy about meeting face-to-face. However, should you wish to locate a writer in your location, you can contact the National Writing Organizations in your genre and ask for recommendations. Another source is your local Universities and Community Colleges. Their professors may be a good fit, or they will know of author/mentors in your area.

It is an exciting time when one writer seeks mentoring by another. I never imagined that I would someday be in both positions—simultaneously. Experience has and is teaching me, that every writer—as we grow in our craft—become counselor, advisor and partner/assistant to other writers. What we learn from helping other writers, both through them and their specific projects, enhances our own skills in ways we may not realize for years. These are continuing paths of education that cannot be measured or given a monetary value.

As we begin this year of 2017, I hope we’ll all enjoy the blessings of being mentored and mentoring at least one other person. And may we never be shy about seeking the mentoring we need. It is through these experiences we become lifetime-learners! ⚓︎

THE WRITER-AUTHOR-MARKETING SPECIALIST – Week V

Now that all the Christmas toys have found their way into our children’s room—or the downstairs family/playroom—or tucked away under our beds—it’s time for all writers to pause and catch a breath. Even during the holidays the relentless dancing-maid-characters of our novels-in-progress have been talking to us, demanding our attention, pushing us to write the next chapter. Please hit the PAUSE button! You and your Marketing Specialist/PR professional have done all there is to do this year. Now it’s time to pull in a deep breath and…

  • Settle in to your favorite reading place, close the door, and read (or re-read) a favorite book! I have shelves full of my “keepers” (as I’m sure you, do) and they range in genre from the Adventure/Sci-fi of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Isaac Asimov and H. G. Wells to the mysteries and miracles of faith from authors such as A. J. Cronin, Lew Wallace and Jonathan Cahn. Reading one of your keepers will refresh mind, heart and spirit—allow you to wallow in the excellence and expertise of creative authors—and heighten your own creativity!
  • Congratulate yourself on surviving yet another wild holiday season which has, after all, reminded you of all the love and laughter, joy and hope that can be found in the world—often in spite of the anxiety-driven drama that we hear on the News. When we pause long enough and consider history—both ancient and immediate—writers observe a kaleidoscope of perspectives that can enhance our every writing project. We’ve just added one more personal perspectives piece of history to this collection. Let’s make sure we’ve taken a few notes to remind us.
  • Take time—and make the effort—to reconnect with neighbors and friends who have just reconnected with you through emails and Christmas cards, Facebook posts or quick phone calls. Why repeat the contact so soon? When this was suggested to me I wanted to ask the same question but decided to simply start with one person and see where that took me. Not only did each conversation lift my spirits, I later learned that the other folks felt the same boost of energy, as if the not-so-great circumstances that many were experiencing would find good outcomes—simply because someone listened to them and cared.
    • There was another marvelous benefit that came from these contacts. Without me mentioning my books—or anything about my writing projects—each person asked about either my first book or the one I’d recently released. I will never know how many of them actually purchased one of the books, however, a few wrote nice online reviews.

As this year of 2016 closes its doors, remember this: YOU ARE A WRITER! Every experience you’ve had this year, every person you’ve met, grown closer to and/or walked away from, every step you’ve taken to build your writing skills (and marketing skills) has moved you toward the New Year.  So enjoy these remaining hours! Rest! Relax! Imagine all your books in the homes of thousands of Readers who have received the gift of your writing skills and inspirations just a few days ago. 2017 will bring you more stories to write and many more FANS! ⚓︎

THE WRITER-AUTHOR-MARKETING SPECIALIST – Week IV

Christmas Day is just around the corner! Is there still time to introduce your book(s) to prospective buyers? Yes. YES! The excitement of the season brings out more buyers than shoppers—right now—with statistics rising every year about those “last-minute Christmas Eve shoppers.” PLUS you’ll have media partners assisting you without spending a penny of your marketing budget! What? Did I say media—as in newspapers, radio and TV? Oh…yes! If you’re like me, you’ve been witness to their push since the end of October. I first noticed our TV news-journalists starting their “countdown to Christmas” on the evening news on October 30th.

How do we make the best of this 48-hour Holiday Book Marketing season? Here are a few ideas.

  • As a published author, you’ve heard the term “Tribe.” A good friend of mine calls these folks her “Peeps.” They have been supporting your writing efforts for a long time—so now is the time to send a THANK YOU email to each and every one—with a bottom line request that they mention your book(s) on every social media site they can.
  • Post your book cover on Pinterest making sure the “about this photo” section has the online buying address of Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, and your publisher. Several statistics from last year indicate that 48 % of last minute shoppers say Pinterest sent them to stores for their final gift purchases.
  • Consider helping your local bookstore by doing a FREE Author-Reads Hour to “help alleviate the stress of last minute shopping by offering people a moment to sit down, rest, and listen to a good story.” So many of bookstores have a coffee corner which would be a perfect setting. They will love the idea of encouraging people to stay in their store rather than leaving and shopping elsewhere.
  • Don’t forget your neighborhood Coffee and Conversation spots. I know of several within a 10-mile radius of my home who ask their author clientele for Excerpt Reading Not only is this an excellent place to personally sell—and autograph—your book(s), it is also a great opportunity to build your Tribal Community of reading friends. Don’t forget to set out a notebook where they can sign-up—with name and email address—for Breaking News about your new writing projects.

a bell for christmas landria onkkaIF you happen to be an author of a Holiday Season/Christmas book—for any age group or genre—this is an especially wonderful time of year for you. Novels such as A Bell for Christmas in Landria Onkka’s Miracle Series make excellent gifts for Readers who enjoy a good mystery that adds a Christmas Miracle. And, of course, an appreciation for poetry (a bestselling genre at Christmas) definitely increases right now. I’m considering this collection of inspirational poems—Celebrating Christmas by Inez M. Peetz—for my Aunt of 87 years who continues to be a voracious reader of all styles of poetry and loves reading to the children at her church. Each verse is beautifully illustrated and highlights the Christmas story as foretold by God’s prophets and angels.celebrating christmas inez peet

WHY would I consider these purchases today? Because Amazon will deliver them tomorrow!

May your Christmas/Holiday weekend be filled with great happiness, my writing friends. Keep your creative candle burning brightly and absorb the memory moments. They will give you inspiration for stories you’ve not yet written! ⚓︎

THE WRITER-AUTHOR-MARKETING SPECIALIST – Week III

How do we go about finding the PR Marketing Specialist who fits? I’ve done a lot of listening to successful authors, writing conference speakers, and the publishing consultants who’ve supported me. Here are criteria I’ve developed.

  • GET REFERRALS from authors you know. Every well-known author I’ve approached at conferences is happy to give me the name and contact information of their marketing assistant. However, if talking with other authors makes you nervous, you can always contact them through their websites.
  • Talk with Literary Agents. These folks have a list of book campaign specialists that they rely on and most of the time they will share a name or two with you.
  • Research! A quick Google search using keywords such as book marketing strategies will lead you to multiple resources. I know that you’re already doing hours of research on the writing project you’re working on—so—pick a day of the month to look up and read one or two of these resources. Then, create your own computer file of the ideas you find most interesting. Yes, these ideas are things you could do on your own, but in reality do you have the time? This file will be a great help when you listen to the ideas of the prospective marketing partners you’ll be talking with.
  • For you and your book(s) it’s all about Personal Connection. As you interview potential assistants, make note of their responses in the following categories:
    • working with authors (ask for references from authors they’ve assisted)
    • the specific genre of your book (what is their familiarity with your genre)
    • the types of market analysis they will build for you
    • their pattern of contact with authors (how often will they update you on what they’re doing and/or what they need you to do)
    • the specific social media elements they use and their success rate within each of those online sites (for other authors)
    • their skill and ability to design promotion pieces—both written and visual (ask for samples)
    • what marketing schedules or plans have been most successful for them (get samples)
  • LISTEN to your own publishing consultants. Whether your book is published through a traditional house or you’ve self-published you’ll work with people whose focus is to present you and your book in “bright lights.” They become successful only when their authors do well so it is in their best interest to match you with an excellent Marketing Specialist.

Remember the guy who asked me about what my campaign strategy was? Well, he also made another statement that I’ve greatly appreciated. “The marketing piece of being an author can be compared to building a football Super Bowl team. They don’t win that title without a whole team of coaches teaching them how to be the best.” So it is that I’m building a library of resource books (such as the Marketing Coach one shown here) and a computer file of ideas—and questions—that I’ll be asking the Marketing Specialist I hire. I hope you will do the same. ⚓︎
