Famous Self-Published Author: Thomas Paine

In school, you learned all about the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. Well, one of the most important publications at that time was originally self-published. Common Sense by Thomas Paine was a pamphlet that encouraged freedom from England. The pamphlet was originally self-published anonymously and became an instant success. The publication is still discussed and read in schools and colleges today.

Not only did people read and love this self-published publication, but it sparked change and lead to our freedom. If you want to make a difference in society, share your ideas with the world. Don’t be afraid of rejection, and if someone tells you that no one will ever read or remember a self-published book, think of Thomas Paine.

  1. Wow, this post really caught my eye. As a self-published author and life-long Thomas Paine worshipper, I’m happy to see him acknowledged here. When my kids did their American History reports in grade school on “What book changed the course of American History?” I immediately said, “Why, Common Sense, of course!” They each displayed skepticism and doubt. (They didn’t want to trust silly Mommy and be humiliated in class when they found out that I was wrong.) But I convinced them to trust me, and, SURPRISE! They found out that Mommy knew her stuff, after all. Now adults, they remember his name and contribution to our nation. I’m glad to see we’re not the only ones! Thanks for this reminder.

  2. Yes, self-published books are still changing the world. And the world has changed as well. Self-published authors are now accepted on an equal basis with authors from “the big guys”. As a self-published author you can go just as far as anyone else. And don’t let the fact that you are a self-published author hold you back from pitching broadcast producers to be booked as an expert guest. You can do it. OK, good luck, Edward Smith
